Wanted: Course content editor for exciting new role at world-class climbing platform
Hi there,
My name’s Kathryn and I’m head of production at Altitude.
Altitude is an online climbing platform co-founded by Magnus Midtbø. We produce courses with the most iconic climbers and climbing coaches, such as:Â
Adam Ondra, Hazel Findlay, Alex Megos, Dave MacLeod, to name a few.Â
We’re looking for someone to join our team as Course Content Editor, a role that blends journalism, screenwriting, ghostwriting and teaching.
The right person will be an experienced climber or climbing coach themselves, or someone who has worked with a lot of climbing coaches (perhaps you’re a book editor who’s worked on several non-fiction climbing books).
We’re looking for the person who can help us shape the courses with the climbers listed above (and more). Most of them are incredible climbers but don't have as much experience teaching/coaching, so we need someone to shape their courses and really make them shine.
If you are someone who…
- Is an impeccable writer, communicator, questioner and outliner;
- Understands (or is highly intrigued by) the world of online courses and has taken, or been a part in creating at least one yourself;
- Has an aura of competence and certainty about them (instructors need to feel that they’re in impeccably safe hands during discussions);
- Can be a reassuring presence, instilling confidence in instructors, and getting them relaxed enough to have their best work tumble out of them (as well as challenging and debating them when necessary);
- Has creative ideas for sending course completion rates through the roof;
…this could be the opportunity you’ve been looking for.
Editing is an artform. It involves an alchemy of balance between the instructor’s experience and knowledge, and what the members of our courses need to be taught. (Something they themselves are largely unaware of.)
Are you capable of looking at customer research, feedback from course members, and all the ideas an instructor has and shaping it into a course outline and plans for all the videos we’ll need to shoot?
If that sounds exciting and something you’d excel at, I’d love to hear from you.
Duties will include…
- Extensive strategic interviewing of our instructors, over 10–15 calls, to get all of their expertise out of their heads and down on paper;
- Working with instructors existing course or book outlines to adapt them to the online course format;
- Working with me to decide on the format of courses; whether best delivered to-camera, as a talk/lecture, in an interview format, roundtable, or any other style — always keeping an eye to what makes sense from a learning, engagement and user-completion point of view;
- Holding instructors accountable for work that’s required of them between calls to keep on track;
- Writing and editing scripts for course videos, as well as managing the creation of course documents, keeping things simple and concise for the end-user;
- Attending the shoot and working with the director and producer to keep the instructors on track and get all the content we need;
- Writing and editing course text and other resources, such as briefing the designer on any diagrams needed;
- Reviewing course feedback to make sure we are continuously improving our processes and courses.
You don’t necessarily need prior experience working with video or online courses, however you should have an obsession with structuring courses, making them more effective, getting the most out of pro climbers, thinking through volunteer sessions, and looking for ways to improve course completion rates.
You’ll be working directly with me and will also have the support of various other team members to lighten administrative load and allow you to focus on shaping and honing course content and making instructors shine.

This position will start off as a contractor at 20-25 hours a week but has the potential to become full time within 3-6 months, with the potential to become an employee at that point. Pay will be set at a competitive hourly rate to begin.
Most of our instructors and team are based in Europe, so it’d be ideal if you are too. You’ll need to be available to have several calls a week with instructors and to travel to shoots (approximately one every 2 months).Â
To apply…
Please write back ([email protected]) with a short letter noting your experience and why you think you would be a good fit. Do not send a CV, but do please note credentials that you think will assist you in the role.
We won’t be able to get back to everyone, but for those who stand out, we will be in touch to discuss next steps.
Thank you for reading and I look forward to hearing from you,
Kathryn
