Wanted: Confident video director for world-class climbing platform
Hi there,
My name’s Kathryn and I’m head of production at Altitude.
Altitude is an online climbing platform co-founded by Magnus Midtbø. We produce courses with the most iconic climbers and world-class climbing coaches, such as:
Adam Ondra, Daniel Woods, Hazel Findlay, Alex Megos, Dave MacLeod, to name a few.
We’re looking for a video director to join our team on a project-by-project basis to help organize and lead our video shoots.
The ideal candidate:
- Is a climber themselves or has experience directing indoor/outdoor sports videos
- Is based in Europe and able to travel to multi-day shoots every 4-6 weeks
- Is confident in hiring, leading and directing a small local crew; think 2-4 cameras, a sound engineer, a production assistant
- Knows what such a crew needs in terms of gear and understands (or knows how to find) local regulations on things like using drones, etc.
- Has great vision and can work with the head of production and the course editor to translate the course vision into beautiful, high-quality and valuable videos
- Is calm and confident under pressure, and knows how to command a set, even with multiple team members, a crew, talent and volunteers/extras
- “Fills in the gaps” and knows all the things about video production that the rest of the team aren’t experienced with – you’ll be in charge of making sure shoots go smoothly and that we get the footage we need
- Can manage a budget: We need to adhere to tight budgets – potentially much less than you’re used to working with – being resourceful, efficient and creative in thinking.
For this role, we’d like to find someone with experience who isn’t afraid to steer us in the right direction, make creative suggestions, and take the lead with hiring crew and booking locations.
Why we need you:
Whilst most of our instructors are used to climbing on camera, not all of them are used to teaching on camera. We need someone who can get stellar on-camera performances from busy pro-climbers with little to no rehearsal time.
We need to cultivate an advantage of getting tremendous performances from the people we work with, while having them love the experience from start to finish.
We’re (proudly) a bootstrapped company and re-shoots aren’t an option. We cannot afford to make mistakes.
With that, we’re looking for an experienced director/producer to take the reins.
If you have the ability to manage a small team while putting people at ease in-front of camera – making them feel confident in their message, and knowing what to do if they freeze or lose their way – we want to hear from you.
You don’t need to be a video editor nor take care of post-production, but if you do work with any great editors who might be interested, feel free to point them towards our video editor ad.
To apply:
This will be a project-to-project role so we’re looking to hire an independent contractor who is able to attend a shoot every 4-6 weeks and to help remotely with planning in between (no more than 5-10 hours/week). The first shoot will be in January but we’d like to get this person on board now so we can involve them in the planning.
Pay will be set at a competitive project rate, and all shoot-related travel expenses will be covered.
If the position excites you, write me ([email protected]) a short email noting your experience and why you think you would be a good fit. Please include 1-2 samples of videos that you’ve directed and tell us why you’re proud of them. Do not send a CV – all that matters is whether you can do it.
We won’t be able to get back to everyone, but for those who stand out, we’ll be in touch within a few days.
Thank you for reading and I look forward to hearing from you,
Kathryn
