Before we can let you into the course…

We need you to read this quick note about climbing safety.

At Altitude, safety is our top priority, and we want to ensure that you have an enjoyable and secure climbing experience. Before diving into how to overcome your fear of falling, it’s important to understand and adhere to a few fundamental safety principles.

Belaying and safety basics:
While our course focuses on overcoming fear of falling, it does contain some tips on belaying practices. However, it’s essential to reinforce your knowledge of safety fundamentals if you’re new to climbing, whether that’s top roping in the gym or leading outdoors. Be sure you are well-versed in belaying safety and techniques, including how to tie in properly, giving a “soft catch” and managing weight differences between the climber and belayer.

For outdoor lead climbing, understanding how to place quickdraws, build an anchor, and safely retrieve your gear is indispensable. If you need to update your safety knowledge, your best resource is a qualified instructor who can provide in-person demonstrations of all you need to know.

Bouldering safely:
Outdoor bouldering introduces more variables than indoors, such as uneven surfaces and weather conditions. Use adequate crash pads, arrange them strategically, and have a spotter to guide your falls whenever possible. Be mindful of the natural environment and adhere to local guidelines to preserve the climbing area.

Warm-up and injury prevention:
While Hazel’s course primarily concentrates on the psychological aspects of climbing, it’s crucial to recognize the importance of warming up. To reduce the risk of injuries, always begin your sessions with a thorough warm-up to maximize your performance and safety.
