Hazel Findlay

Hazel is world-famous for her bold and adventurous climbing. She was the first woman to climb a British trad route at E9, and the first British woman to sport climb 8c and free El Capitan in Yosemite, which she has now done four times. She has put up first ascents in many countries worldwide including big walls in Greenland. As a top mental training coach, Hazel specializes in helping people overcome fears and limitations so they can focus on the task at hand and perform at their best. As well as having deep water soloed in the UK, Oman, and Thailand, she famously helped Australian climber Angie Scarth-Johnson overcome her DWS fears in Mallorca in the Reel Rock film Yeah Buddy.

Angus Kille

Angus Kille is an MCI instructor/rock guide, coach, and semi-professional climber. He’s been climbing for 16 years and has climbed 9a sport climbs, V11 boulder, free-climbed El Capitan twice and climbed many E9 trad routes. In 2021, Hazel and Angus founded Strong Mind, a company focused on coaching and training products in fear management and performance psychology in climbing.

DON’T JUST TAKE
OUR
WORD FOR IT

In May 2025, ten climbers joined Hazel and Angus in Mallorca for their first-ever retreat. Here’s what just some of them had to say about the experience:

“The altitude retreat really was a once in a lifetime opportunity!

I had no lead climbing or DWS experience going into the trip - but I was able to learn so much and experience all these new styles of climbing in just a few days, and feel confident in my ability going forward.

Hazel and Angus were fantastic coaches, their approach to mindset training was invaluable whilst learning to lead climb and DWS for the first time.

On top of it all I was able to meet some amazing climbers from around the world and enjoy great food.

You won’t regret this experience :)”
Justin L. (26, United Kingdom)

“Very much recommend going on one of Altitude’s retreats. I had an absolutely wonderful time - everything was super well organised, everyone was lovely and created a great environment to climb in. The guides and hosts were very knowledgeable and made the experience unique and individualised.”
Star Z. (24, Australia)

“I loved the entire Mallorca retreat experience with Hazel and Angus, from the teaching days to the fall practice days, to the days of just enjoying the beauty of the coast and deep water solo in calm, clear, turquoise waters. I would recommend an Altitude retreat to any climber who is looking to experience personal climbing growth in a beautiful location guided by wonderful people.”
Julie B. (44, New Mexico, USA)

In Spring 2024, we filmed Hazel’s online course about overcoming your fear of falling. We invited a group of climbers to be part of the course and learn first-hand from Hazel and Angus. Here’s what they had to say about the experience:

“Working with Hazel and Angus is really great because they bring a relaxed attitude, which makes you, in turn, feel relaxed so that you can push yourself to fall higher, and be able to develop those skills, uh, in a nice, safe environment.”
Kyle O. (28, UK)

“Yeah, I really enjoyed working with them. They're both a very calm and collected couple who give really sort of concise advice and they take you through step by step and check in an awful lot, which I really appreciated. They kind of took me through it incrementally rather than throwing me in the deep end and seeing how I did.”
Emmy Y. (29, UK)

FAQs

How many people will be participating?
We want everyone who participates to have meaningful climbing time and plenty of opportunities to connect with our hosts and other climbers. With that in mind, we only have a maximum of 14 slots available.

Can I bring a family member?
We can’t accommodate any non-climbing partners/observers of registered participants. We do have options to choose your roommate if you’ll be traveling with a climbing partner, so do let us know if that’s the case.

What are the physical requirements?
To get the most out of this experience, you should be comfortable climbing around 6a or 5.10a on top rope in the gym. You should also be fit enough to hike up to three miles on varied terrain.

What kind of gear should I bring?
So you don’t have to worry about lugging your gear, just throw your climbing shoes, harness, and chalk in your bag, and we’ll cover the rest. However, if you prefer to use your own gear, you’re welcome to bring it along.

What is the cost?
The price for everything above is $5,995 USD. Payment can be made in full or through three monthly installments of $1,999 USD.

What kind of room will I have?

Don’t mind sharing a bed with a friend or partner? A “duo room” can be arranged for $5,495 each. (Limited number available.)

We also have a limited number of single-occupancy rooms that can be arranged at an additional cost.

Any rooming preferences can be mentioned in your application.
